Yesterday was a massive day for all of us @theesop

Yesterday was a massive day for all of us @theesop. I am still buzzing from the experience 🙏🏼

We had the incredible Scottish artist @kencurrie1 visit our ESOP studios.

We were then all invited to a unique insight into how Ken approaches his artistic practice and what influences his work, as he was interviewed by another huge figure in the contemporary art world ‘Sandy Moffat ‘.

I was lucky enough to have a tutorial with Ken after.

To say I felt honoured is an understatement , I have been very influenced by Ken’s work ever since seeing the ‘Black Boat’ exhibition @flowersgallery last year. Had I not seen the ‘Black Boat’ series - I doubt I would have been brave enough to make the leap in my practice and create my Barristers in a boat painting ‘The curse Of the Modern Mariner’ see second photo.

We discussed the essence and importance of bringing truth and power to our work, how even dark subjects still require luminosity in both paint and intention.

The words that I will remind myself of often now are as follows:-

“ Allow the paint to do its thing “

Paint has its own way of showing you a way into and around our subject matter. Even though I struggle with creating work with dark subjects and painful memories , it is still important and powerful to make the work - regardless of what anyone else thinks. Through the darkness may we find light ✨🙏🏼

In this instinctively constructed triptych I’m asking myself questions about the purpose /purposelessness of life. Not only personally but globally, as our world continues to lunge into new levels of terror and horrors that test the notion of humanity.

I began a triptych this week. A response to the horrors going on in the world right. It seems the only way to figure out how I feel about it all. The devastation, the alienation, the loss of lives. Themes that resonate with my practice but even more so now with the apocalyptic images we see daily on the news .

Am exhausted by it all now… and praying for all those with loved ones affected by experiences that shatter lives and shake our belief in humanity and the future of our world.

Haven’t put this book down since Hughie O’Donoghues book launch @royalacademyarts last week.

Such a beautiful read- so beautifully written and edited. For me it’s personally compelling, as I also share the journey of Irish parents leaving the west coast of Ireland for a better future and the memories and meaning that entails in my work.

Last Friday myself and five other artists from the EADY course @theesop were invited to a unique studio visit at the legendary @hughieodonoghue London studio.

I’m sure I speak on all our behalf’s when I say that we were all completely blown away by the day.

Learning about Hughie’s history, influences, process and intentions with his work. Why the ground is so important in making work and then to be able to walk around a beautifully organised studio and see how another artist work. So inspiring🤍🙏🏼

It was a day to remember indeed.

A big thank you also to the lovely Clare for our wonderful lunch and providing such a warm welcome 🙏🏼
